Foray Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 2, 2026
Inside Out Technology is a software brand of Ed Sim Consulting.
What Foray is
Foray is a food-logging app. You log what you eat by photo, description, barcode, or search, and the app estimates nutrition for you — always with a stated confidence, never a bare number.
What we collect, and where it lives
Nothing you log leaves your device to any server we operate. Foray has no user accounts and no server-side database of your data. Everything you log — meals, photos, notes, your daily targets, your reaction logs, your weight trend — is stored locally on your phone using Apple's on-device storage (SwiftData). If you delete the app, that data is gone; we don't have a copy anywhere.
Photos and food descriptions you log are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to identify what you ate — this is what powers the photo and text logging paths. That call is made directly from your device, is not stored by Foray afterward, and is subject to Anthropic's own API data-handling terms. Anthropic does not train on API data by default. Search, barcode, and "log as usual" logging never leave your device or make any AI call at all.
Food names and barcodes are looked up against public nutrition databases — USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts — to ground estimates in real nutrition data. These lookups send the food name or barcode only, never anything that identifies you.
If you enable it, Foray reads your body weight from Apple Health. This is read-only — Foray never writes to Health, and your weight data is used only to show your own trend inside the app. It is never sold, never shared with any third party, and never used for advertising, in accordance with Apple's Health data guidelines. You can revoke this permission at any time in iOS Settings.
Foray records some usage counters on your device to improve the app — for example, how food estimates are generated and how you interact with the reaction log. These stay entirely on your phone, stored the same way as everything else described above, and are never transmitted to us or to anyone else.
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no data broker relationships of any kind.
- No selling or sharing your data with third parties for their own purposes.
- No tracking across other apps or websites.
- No analytics or usage data ever leaves your device. The on-device counters described above never transmit anywhere — there is no server on our end for them to go to. If that changes in a future version, this policy will say so plainly, and any data we do transmit will be de-identified and kept separate from anything that could be linked back to you.
Your Claude API key (beta builds)
Some beta builds ask you to enter a Claude API key so photo and text logging work. That key is stored only in your device's Keychain — it is never sent to us, never logged, and never leaves your device except in direct calls to Anthropic's API to process your own requests.
Deleting your data
Delete the app. Because everything lives on-device, that removes it completely — there is no server-side copy to separately request deletion of.
Health information
Foray is a general wellness tool. It does not diagnose, treat, or provide medical advice, and estimates and trends shown in the app are not a substitute for professional medical guidance. If you use Foray's reaction-tracking feature, what you log is shown back to you as you entered it and is never used to suggest a diagnosis or a cause.
Children
Foray is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13 (or the relevant minimum age in your region).
Changes to this policy
If how Foray handles data changes, this page will be updated and the effective date above will change. Material changes will be noted at the top of the page.
